Sequim Balloon Festival

Balloon Festival

Balloons make wonderful photographic subjects, bright and colorful shapes against a clear sky. The town of Sequim, on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State hosted a 2 day event some time ago and I attended their Night Glow event.

There was a display of antique cars, live music, and of course the balloons. The event was held in a field where they had carefully laid down a thick sheet of plastic and covered it with water to create a reflective pond specifically for the night glow event.

The water ran off, leaving the plastic exposed, but the results at night were stunning!

These images are for sale as canvas wraps (You can get them with floating frames, very cool!) as well as fine art prints. Here is the link.

Goat Rocks Wilderness

The Goat Rocks Wilderness is located in the southern Cascades of Washington State. Remnants of an ancient volcano core eroded into crags of stone, the Goat Rocks lie between the mammoth summit of Mount Rainier and Washington State’s second highest peak, Mount Adams.

The Pacific Crest Trail makes its way through the wilderness on its way from Mexico to Canada.

In late July and early August the snow melts and the meadows are alive, painted with acres and acres of fantastically beautiful wildflowers.

Snow Grass Flats is a fairy-like section of trail nearby. The Bear Grass and Lupine creating such color splendor that its hard to hike!

If you’d like to purchase a canvas wrap or fine art print, here is the gallery to view and choose size and frame.

Next summer Washington State Photo Tours are available! Tulip Photo Tours, Night Sky Photo Tours and North Cascades Hiking Tours.

500th Post

January 2009 is when I began this blog.

Time is an illusory creature. 7 years ago seems like yesterday and a different lifetime, all at once.

During that span I have posted stories of hitchhiking, near death experiences and other adventures.

I have posted travel reports and given advice.

But mostly I have posted pictures. Lots of pictures!

Images of the Mountains,

Images of Tulip Fields,

Pictures of Ocean,

and pictures of Night.

I hope you have enjoyed looking as much as I have enjoyed sharing.

Thank you all.

I’ll be seeing you soon!

Winchester Mountain Lookout

I made two trips up to the Winchester Mountain Lookout in September. Both times I spent the night in the lookout.

What an incredible spot!

Just being in any mountain lookout is special. The remoteness, views, air, sky and colors…

Here is the gallery where you can purchase prints.

Here are a few more images from the second trip.

Choosing images for the 2016 Washington Scenic Calendar

September is here, soon autumn will be with us. This is my signal to start work on the 2016 Calendar.

My task is to sort through the years images and somehow come up with 13 stunning shots.

As I review the files there are a few special shots which will almost certainly be included in this next years calendar and in other cases I have a series of shots from a particular spot and need help choosing which is the best one for the calendar. This is where you come in, I will post a grouping of images from a specific spot. Please vote for your favorite in each section by making a comment below or emailing me at: andyporterphotography@gmail.com

Mount Baker and the Park Butte Lookout

The Park Butte Lookout is a decommissioned fire lookout from decades past. Perched on a precipice along a ridge on the south side of Mount Baker the lookout commands a wide view of the North Cascades.

Now maintained by the Skagit Alpine Club the lookout is open to the public and if you wish, you can spend th night there.

Which is what I did a few days ago, I hiked up, hoping to get images of the night sky and Milky Way.

But, alas, it was not to be, after sunset the clouds rolled in.

Stars, Tent and Kids

Here is another shot from the other night along the Baker River.

Camped under the Milky Way 3

Camped under the Milky Way 3

I had in my mind several images, planning and scheming as we hiked in, having the kids in the tent illuminated with the I-Pad, having them look out of the tent, in awe at the stars.

Here is the i-pad shot. Not too bad! A little overexposed on the face of the kid (Dawson) holding the device.

Then I tried an image with them looking out of the tent. I used the red light function on my head lamp to illuminate their faces and this is what I got:

IMG_8179At first I didn’t even try to edit it, it looked so red.

But later I decided to give it a try. I edited (in photoshop, as a raw file) the foreground, then went back and edited the raw a second time, but edited just the sky.

Then I merged the two and did final editing.

That’s Joe on the left, wrapped in the sleeping bag. And my son, Max is the incredulous one on the right!

Not too bad!

I guess I’ll have to take the kids camping more often!
