Mount Baker, North Cascades

From Wikipedia: After Mount Rainier, Mount Baker is the most heavily glaciated of the Cascade Range volcanoes; the volume of snow and ice on Mount Baker, 0.43 cu mi (1.79 km³) is greater than that of all the other Cascades volcanoes (except Rainier) combined. It is also one of the snowiest places in the world; in 1999, Mount Baker Ski Area, located 14 km (8.7 mi) to the northeast, set the world record for recorded snowfall in a single season—1,140 in (2,900 cm).^[12]

Sauk Mountain Trail

The Sauk Mountain Trail is a local favorite. It is the shortest drive to a mountain trail, melts out early, has spectacular wildflowers…and fantastic views.

I made my way up last week and spent the night. Here are a few images from the journey, sunset, night sky and sunrise.

Skyline Divide

Last summer I visited Skyline Divide. Located in the North Cascades the trail head is accessed from the Mount Baker Highway. Ascending to the ridge is maybe a 3 mile hike, and then you head out towards Mount Baker along the ridge top.
There were many people there, camping and taking pictures.
One photographer and his friend brought along their dog, who added extra flavor to the images.

Sunset at Park Butte Lookout

The Park Butte Lookout is located on the south side of Mount Baker, in the Mt. Baker, Snoqualmie National Fores, in the NW corner of Washington State. The lookout was “retired” from use as a fire lookout many years ago and was then adopted by the Skagit Alpine Club, who maintain the lookout for public use.

The Park Butte Lookout is a decommissioned fire lookout from decades past. Perched on a precipice along a ridge on the south side of Mount Baker the lookout commands a wide view of the North Cascades.

Now maintained by the Skagit Alpine Club the lookout is open to the public and if you wish, you can spend th night there.

Which is what I did a few days ago, I hiked up, hoping to get images of the night sky and Milky Way.

But, alas, it was not to be, after sunset the clouds rolled in.

This image of Sahale Glacier Camp in North Cascades National Park got a lot of coverage. It was chosen as an Honorable Mention and is on display in the Smithsonian Museum, in Washington DC.

Sunrise, Steven Mather Wilderness – North Cascades National Park

A new book was about the North Cascades was published by Braided River and the Mountaineers: “The North Cascades, Finding Beauty and Renewal in the Wild Nearby” and I was lucky enough to have 3 images in the book.

I made a trip to Palouse Falls State park and captured an image for the Milky Way over the Falls.

2015 is looking to be another great year.
I have a new schedule of photography classes coming up.

And new articles and images being published in the Mountaineers Magazine and Backpacker Magazine.

I will also be teaching photo classes through the North Cascades Institute, more on that soon.

Travel Plans for the new year include a Washington State Tour, the Enchantments, Olympic National Park, Glacier National Park and a nighttime Tour of Mountain Lookouts in the summer.

Mount Baker (known as “White Sentinel” to Native Peoples) is the queen of the North Cascades range, towering over the NW corner of Washington State.

Skyline Divide, North Cascades

The Skyline Divide Trail is one of many off the Mount Baker Highway (Route 542) that heads up to the high country near Mount Baker. It is one of the busiest trails due to its ease of access and wonderful views.
These images were captured with the morning light after camping on the ridge. The two mountains in the images are Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan.
