The Northern End of the Pacific Crest Trail

The Pacific Crest Trail is a 2,400 mile long foot trail stretching from the US border with Mexico through California, Oregon and Washington State to Canada.

The northern most part of the PCT follows the Cascade Crest crossing Rock Pass, Woody Pass and then making a long gradual ascent of Lakeview Ridge.

Here a more than 7,000 feet the views are breathtaking. Lining the international border are Hozomeen Mountain, Joker and Freezeout Mtns and Castle Peak. To the west the snowy dome of Mount Baker is clearly visible. Three Fools Peak dominates to the horizon to the south.

The grassy ridgetop is a fine place to camp. Snow lingers here, usually until August, providing water.

The easiest way to get here is to drive to Mazama and take the road towards Harts Pass, up the steep valley and towards Slate Peak. The road (generally suitable for passenger vehicles) bisects the PCT just below the summit of Slate Peak. This it the highest point that can be reached by car in Washington. From here its about a 20 mile hike to the top of Lakeview Ridge.

Photo Shoot at Crystal Mountain Resort

Last summer my friend asked me to come along on a nighttime imaging expedition. The plan was to capture images of Mount Rainier from the Crystal Mountain Resort.

The expedition aspect turned out to be pretty mild, we rode the gondola up to the resort and hung around all night, eating, drinking and once in a while taking pictures of the wonderful views!

2014 Highlights

There were many highlights photo-wise in 2014.
I had two images chosen for the cover of Northwest Travel Magazine. Not a bad way to start the year!

2015 is looking to be another great year.
I have a new schedule of photography classes coming up.

And new articles and images being published in the Mountaineers Magazine and Backpacker Magazine.

I will also be teaching photo classes through the North Cascades Institute, more on that soon.

Travel Plans for the new year include a Washington State Tour, the Enchantments, Olympic National Park, Glacier National Park and a nighttime Tour of Mountain Lookouts in the summer.

Thanks for being there and happy trails to you all!

Padilla Bay: A Photo Album

The Padilla Bay Estuary is a place to experience sky and water, clouds and colors. There is an old barn with a dock, on the water asking to have its image captured. Remnants of rusted equipment are strewn along the shore. Birds of all types visit, and the clouds grace the sky with shapes and colors.
Here is a series of images from the last years visits.

Upper Lyman Lake, Glacier Peak Wilderness

This summer I completed the Spider Meadows, Buck Creek pass Loop in the Glacier Peak Wilderness. The hike was simply astounding.

The hike took us through Spider Meadows, then up through the narrow defile of Spider Gap and down into the stark basin of Upper Lyman Lake.

As we ascended the pass the clouds and darkness moved in. After a snack at the crest we descended the glacier, sliding on our butts, in the rain.

I protested the weather and purposefully lollygagged on the way down, hoping for sun…

The views were dramatic, Upper Lyman Lake green and white lay at our feet with Cloudy Peak in the distance.

Our wish was granted, the clouds suddenly parted and the sun reappeared, brightening the day and my spirits!

Mount Baker

Mount Baker (known as “White Sentinel” to Native Peoples) is the queen of the North Cascades range, towering over the NW corner of Washington State.

It takes some time to get to acquainted with such a beauty.

Desolation Peak

Desolation Peak is located on the east side of Ross Lake, along the border with the Pasayten Wilderness. There is a lookout tower atop Desolation, which is still manned by the park service. actually the lookout is a historical site, having been the inspiration to numerous authors, including Jack Kerouac and his book, “Desolation Angels”.
The hike from the lake shore to the summit is 4,500 feet gain in 4.5 miles and there is an official camp near the summit.
