Spring, thankfully, brings the colors back.
The winter creates a grayish monochrome of everything that is interesting for about a week.
When the colors come back, things are better. The snow just melted yesterday and we’ll probably see more before the end of the winter.
So I shouldn’t get myself all excited just yet, but I can sense the subtle stirrings of green.
In February the hints of green will become more pronounced and then, finally, the yellows will arrive with Skagit Valley Daffodils.
Depending upon the year the daffodils start coming up in late February or early March. Skagit Valley has a rather mild climate, rarely getting snow. Early spring brings almost daily rain. The daffodils emerge slowly, reluctantly.
Once the temp starts rising a bit, tulips start to pop up. The anticipation of the coming color explosion is tantalizing!
Every year the tulips and daffodils are planted in different fields.
I usually visit the tulip fields 10 times each season, sunrise is my favorite, because of the light and lack of people. Workers are in the fields then, harvesting and at the end, topping the tulips. I offer guided Photo Tours of Tulip Festival each year, at sunrise and sunset, details and prices can be found here.
Because the fields rotate every year, so do the backdrops, and foregrounds!
Barns, school busses, tractors, irrigation ditches, and puddles all serve well for offsetting the beauty of the flowers.

Starting in Jan 2020 I will also be teaching basic Photography Classes through Parks and Rec in Bellingham.
Sometimes a visit can bring good luck in the form of rainbows, long shadows, dirty kids and much more.

There is something about an old, weathered wooden barn that captures the imagination. I guess barns in general are cool, but to grab attention the barn needs to be made of wood AND look like its seem a bit too many winters.
That gives it a certain character, a personality. barns re great photo subjects anytime. Autumn is always a wonderful barn season, with the fall colors. But for me, spring is the time! Bright green meadows and fantastically colorful skies make a barn image complete!
There are many barns strewn through the Skagit Valley and I was lucky to catch one of my favorites on a night just right for picture taking!
BTW, if you have an interest in capturing Night Sky Images with old barns and buildings, this coming new moon, June 4th, I am leading a night sky class to Eastern Washington to capture Milky Way images and old abandoned buildings. Here is the link for more info!
Fir Island is part of the Skagit River delta. Farms, barns and many types of migratory birds visit.
Here are several images of geese and a barn.

September is here, soon autumn will be with us. This is my signal to start work on the 2016 Calendar.
My task is to sort through the years images and somehow come up with 13 stunning shots.
As I review the files there are a few special shots which will almost certainly be included in this next years calendar and in other cases I have a series of shots from a particular spot and need help choosing which is the best one for the calendar. This is where you come in, I will post a grouping of images from a specific spot. Here are a few images that have already made the final cut:
Another day of mild winter temps and beautiful afternoon skies invited me back out for another visit to Fir Island. My attention was drawn to this huge barn. All the recent rain provided plenty of mirror space.
Fir Island also provides a winter home to snow geese!
Barns have a definite personality. Some are smarmy and conceited, others destitute and abandoned. Old abandoned barns are best. All pretenses are erased and what’s exposed is the soul of the place. With nothing left to hide the history of the place exudes and if you take some time to breathe and listen you will be transported back in time.
This barn is located in La Conner and she had a lot to say!
