Fall at the Skagit Valley

Skagit Valley is in Northwestern Washington State, nestled between the North Cascades Range and the Pacific Ocean. This view is facing up valley.

Wheat Field at Sunset

Yesterday, late in the gloomy afternoon, the clouds commenced to part. I headed towards the water. Capturing images of the marsh and trees and a wonderful old barn I was transfixed. The sun left, departed and so did I. As I returned to the car a sudden streak of sunlight out witted the clouds and let go of one last shout.
Luckily, by then, I had pulled over and managed to find a vantage point snap this shot.

All of these images were from last Friday night, along the Samish River and the farm fields nearby.

Skagit Valley Sunsets

These first three images were taken along Cook Road, just east of I-5. There is a barn here, with no house nearby and the views are expansive. Of course landscapes and skies are always better with stuff in the foreground! tractor-and-sky-1m

This next set of three images was taken 2 nights later, out along the Bayview-Edison Road, just west of Edison. That’s the Samish River there.

Barn at Sunrise

I awoke at 5:30am to take sunrise pictures, but I was almost too late! As I was driving to the ocean I espied this barn and diverted, partly because of the dandelions and mostly because I could see I was late to make it to the shore in time…not that I’m complaining!

Skagit Valley Tulips: 2014

There are 3 good reasons that I take so many pictures of the Tulip Festival each year:
1. Tulips are incredibly colorful!
2. They are very close by!
3. The mountains are still covered with snow!
So, here is a sampling of my favorite images of the Tulips (and Daffodils!) from this year!

Sahale Camp Panoramas

Sahale Glacier Camp sits at the base of Sahale glacier atop 3 piles of rubble each crowned with a ring of stone. The views are breathtaking: a 180 degree sweeping view of the North Cascades, a sea of peaks stretching out to the horizon.

I have visited many times and tried to capture the feel of the view. Here are several panoramas, some from sunrise, and several from sunset, each comprised of two or more images merged.
